Workshop on Innovations in Cantonese Linguistics (Provo, Utah)
The Workshop on Innovations in Cantonese Linguistics (WICL) is a biennial conference that is hosted in North America. It focuses on new advances in Cantonese Linguistics, including innovations in methodologies, tools, and/or computing software. In 2025 the conference takes place in Provo (Utah) USA. Registration is open until 2025-March-31.
A Cantonese Markup / 2025-04-11 (Fri)
Representing Cantonese in written form solely with Chinese ideograms presents ambiguity that cannot be deciphered within a linear context. This limitation is fundamental, and blocks the progress of several downstream technologies such as natural Text-To-Speech (TTS). A markup system, as implemented in the Cantonese Font, will be presented; we will also demonstrate impressive rewards that was attained by resolving this impasse.
WICL Pedagogy Panel / 2025-04-12 (Sat)
The Cantonese pedagogy panel is comprised of scholars currently in the field of teaching Cantonese and pedagogy experts with Cantonese experience. The panel will be presented with a series of leading questions, discussed with feedback and additional questions from the audience.

Why Cantonese Linguistics Impact Digital Humanities / 2025-01-18
In this round-table with 擇明 (EdU, co-founder of 粵典、冚唪唥兒童繪本、TypeDuck 輸入法) and Henry Chan (Ideographic Research Group for Hong Kong), we discuss how two generations of linguists and technologists built out a formidable “technology tree” for Cantonese; how this playbook can be transferred to other low-resource languages; and what our collective achievements impact Digital Humanities.
Fonts as Data & Code Packages / 2025-01-16
We discuss how fonts can be used as a portable media for disseminating data and code together. The Cantonese Font is used as an example of how solutions to complex linguistic (grapheme-to-phoneme G2P) and design (simultaneous CJK, Latin, and graphics layout) problems can be “baked” and accessible cross-platform in real-time.
Cantonese Language Teachers Association / 2024-09-24
In this online workshop, Dr Jon Chui, inventor of the Cantonese Font, showcases how the Font can help prepare Cantonese learning materials at least 10 times faster than alternative methods, and hidden features in the Font that helps teachers with live activities.
Prof Lee-Sik Dennig and her volunteer tutors from the Cantonese Alliance will then discuss how they have been using the Font for teaching in the past four months.
